Episode Synopsis
A hazy flashback sequence begins the episode. Bobby, in voice-over, is explaining how his father got him and his brother Matty to learn boxing to toughen them up. Bobby says that by the time Matty was fourteen, he was taking on two cops at a time. We see Matty struggling with some cops on a street corner to illustrate this. Bobby, however, never took to it, he never liked beating people. "I guess in some circles that made me a suspect," Bobby says. We fade into a scene featuring Adult Bobby fighting in a ring, and then a different ring with a Young Bobby, all padded up and getting his face bashed in by some boy. Although Bobby never took to boxing, he says, his friend Paulie did. Their mothers were tight, the two families lived in the same building. Bobby never felt comfortable hitting Paulie, but Paulie had no problems punching the stuffing out of Bobby. We watch as Bobby gets beat up. Bobby explains that Paulie was good, really good, and Bobby was never a sparring partner for him, but more of a body bag. He says that instead of hating the guy for beating him up in the ring, he loved the kid. Paulie, Bobby says, was simply the best friend he ever had.
We get shots of the two boys walking along, growing into the men they would later become. Bobby says that the two shared everything -- homework, TV shows, Penthouses, even Paulie's sister. Bobby explains that Paulie's sister, Gina, was two years younger than him and he never paid much attention to her, but then she suddenly grew up. She was the first girl with whom he ever made love. We see the young Bobby and a young Gina in a room. The girl, who he says was in ninth grade, kisses him, and then stands up and starts taking off her Catholic-school uniform. Bobby says that plaid skirts and white socks still make him weak in the knees. Bobby says that Paulie was okay with his getting it on with his sister, probably because Bobby really cared about her. They were together for five years, Bobby says. Then she married some plumber from Queens, they have three kids. We go back to the lovemaking scene as the two kids kiss, Gina with her shirt half unbuttoned. Teen-Bobby stops to take some gum out of his mouth, stick it on the dresser, and continue to get it on. "She broke my heart," says Bobby.
Bobby continues with the tale of Paulie, who went from Golden Gloves to trying to turn pro as a boxer. But a Puerto Rican boxer stood in his way and knocked him down three times before a fight was mercifully stopped. Bobby says that Paulie was left with a shot at finding another way of making a living. But he never did. We see Bobby in the audience at that fight, looking sad, mouthing "Come on, Paulie!" Bobby says that Paulie just hung around the neighborhood after that, not doing much of anything, and the two lost touch. Bobby went to college, broke up with Gina and drifted away. Paulie, last he heard, was working some odd jobs. We cut between scenes of Paulie knocked out in the fight, and Bobby working out in the gym and sparring. He says he still doesn't like to hit people and usually avoids sparring at the gym and guiltily admits that he lost track of Paulie. We get a shot of him at the fight, looking concerned as Paulie lay on the mat, bleeding. "I'd let Paulie slip out of my life," Bobby says, "but that was about to change." We see Bobby's face watching Paulie knocked-out in the ring, sad, disbelieving. We cut to the opening credits.
We come back to Bobby at his mom's house. We pull back from a photo of Young Bobby in a frame to the grown-up version messing with some phone wires. "Mami?" Bobby calls out. Then he speaks some Spanish really fast. Bobby's mom yells, "What...?" Bobby tells her that she should get a second phone line so she can be online and use the phone at the same time. She enters the doorway and asks whether the internet is messing with her phone. Bobby tries to explain and Mom says she just wants to e-mail her sister. Bobby, the good son that he is, says that he will call the phone company himself so they can get her another line. He starts putting his jacket on, about to leave. Mom complains that Rose could just pick up her phone and call, but Bobby says that e-mail is cheaper than long distance. "And the computer -- that's cheap?" asks Mom. Bobby tells Mom that he's gotta go to work and that he'll come by tomorrow to hook her up with an ISP and log her on. "Log...on?" she asks. She complains that it's too complicated. He says it'll be fine, and calls her "Shorty." She is half his height. He kisses her on the cheek.
As Bobby's leaving Mom says that Gina came around looking for him when she was visiting her own mother downstairs. "Gina Fuentes?" asks Bobby, surprised. Mom confirms. Bobby asks if Gina said what she wanted. "She said she wanted to talk to you," says Mom. Bobby smiles an all-knowing smile. Mom notices. "Stop smiling like that. Her marriage is fine," she stresses. Bobby looks disappointed. "Just thinking how long it's been since I last saw her," he explains. "I know what you're thinking," Mom smiles. "You leave her alone! You hear?" She also mentions Gina's three kids and her good husband. Bobby wiggles an eyebrow. "She's got a husband, Mom. I'm not so sure about the good part," he says, waves his Mom good-bye, then smiles a devilish smile walking away and announcesg, "Don't worry. She's safe."
Kim and Bobby in the ambulance. "So she ditched you for a plumber?" Kim asks, smiling. Bobby glances at her with a frown. "Sort of," he says. Kim demands details. Bobby says that they weren't ready to get married, so they decided to start seeing some other people. Kim gives him a "I can't believe you" look. "It was her idea or yours?" she asks. Bobby looks away without a word, almost ducking. Kim deduces that he initiated "seeing other people," so that he could "sleep with other people," while Gina "waited around." But she fell in love with someone instead. Bobby gets defensive. "It wasn't like that!" he says. "Serves you right for being a jerk," she replies. "We weren't ready to get married," he offers lamely. "Yeah, maybe she was, but you weren't," Kim laughs. "Just drive!" Bobby finally yells. That's the only hilarious scene in the episode.
Evening time. Kim and Bobby get out of their rig and walk towards the station. It's apparently damn cold. Kim is complaining that she offered Jimmy her couch while he and Brooke try to figure out whether they're staying together, and that it's been three weeks and that he can't stay there forever. Bobby's barely listening. "Who?" he asks. "You've been barely listening!" exclaims Kim. Guess what, Kimmy, the old Kim and Jimmy saga is a bore. "Jimmy!" Kim tells Bobby. "He's still on your sofa!?" Bobby exclaims. He can't believe it, clearly. Kim explains that it's only till Jimmy "comes around" with Brooke. They walk into the station.
We go back to the conversation when they walk up the stairs. "I thought they split up," Bobby says. Kim says that Brooke said that if he comes around, she plans to shoot him, but that Jimmy hopes that she will calm down and forgive him.
They undress, Bobby desires coffee and announces his desire. Carlos is sitting at the table, points over to an empty coffee machine and says that he just had the last cup. Bobby gets annoyed, cause Carlos drank the last cup and didn't start a fresh pot. Carlos tells Bobby that he can start one himself and adds that he (Carlos) always makes fresh coffee. "Unfortunately," comments Doc, who just walked in.
Doc comes up to Bobby and in a conspiratorial whisper tells him that he's got a visitor. "Yeah?" asks Bobby surprised. "Yeah," says Doc and points out an attractive woman who's standing at the window, looking out. I'm wondering how she could have missed Bobby, she's only standing several feet away. Doc says he told the woman he didn't know when Bobby was coming back, but that she said she'd wait. Bobby is curious. "Tell Jimmy he's gotta get his own place," he says, passing Kim. He is walking toward the woman, smoothing out his clothes, apparently hoping for a date, or something. The woman turns to face him, she's beautiful. Bobby looks smitten. He smiles a wide smile and says, "Hey, Gina". "Hi, Bobby," she replies, also smiling widely. She asks if she's gonna get him in trouble by coming over to the station, but he says that she won't, that things are pretty casual at the station. He then says that he will have to go if they get a call. Gina looks around and says that the place is nice, comfortable. I set my teeth. Cut to the chase, will you? In your case, the messenger should get shot, you know. Bobby thanks her, smiles slightly and asks her what's going on. That's when Kim walks up and offers some instant coffee. Bobby is so hign up in the dreamland he forgets to introduce them two women to each other for a second. He comes around, though, makes a serious face and introduces them. He introduces Gina with her maiden name. "Gina Bowerd," she corrects him, shaking Kim's hand, "I've been married for eight years. Bobby tells Gina that Kim is his partner. Kim says she's heard a lot about Gina. "Oh yeah?" Gina asks, surprised. "Oh, yeah," Kim smiles knowingly. Bobby gets uncomfortable, looks at Kim and thanks her for the coffee, pointedly. Kim smiles at him, Gina notices. Bobby finally shoos Kim away. "Sorry," he stutters, "she thinks she's my mother." He takes a sip from his mug. "You two...?" Gina asks. Bobby denies, unevenly. "Never?" Gina presses, smiling. "Ah..." Bobby starts, smiles and shrugs slightly. Gina smiles knowingly. He smiles back and then asks what's up. "It's Paulie," she says. "I think he's really in trouble." Bobby sighs sadly. No more smiles.
In the ambulance, Bobby's driving and Kim's asking how long it's been since Bobby saw Gina. Few years, says Bobby. Kim comments it's a long time and why did Gina come to Bobby after such a long time. Bobby says that it's because he and Paulie were "tight." Kim asks if Paulie had any problems when they were young. Bobby says that Paulie liked to party. "So what?" he adds, "We all did." When they arrive Kim mutters, "Nice neighborhood," and Bobby just looks at her noncommittally. Kim adds that she's gonna stay in the ambulance. "Lock the doors," Bobby tells her and gets out, taking his med-pack. Kim locks the door.
Bobby walks up to Gina on the street and asks her what happened to Paulie's place at 87th. "He got evicted," Gina tells him. They walk up to a building. Bobby stops Gina and tells her that she doesn't have to go up with him, she can wait. But she doesn't wanna wait and they go up together. Inside it's a dark, badly lit hallway. Gina tells Bobby that the elevator doesn't work. "What floor?" Bobby asks her. She rushes him to follow her. They arrive at a door and Gina knocks on it, calling Paulie's name. Nobody answers. She calls him again, but still nothing. Bobby asks her if she's sure Paulie's in there and she says she's not. But she has the keys, takes them out and opens the door. They enter. It's completely dark inside. It's also freezing as Bobby observes. Gina keeps calling Paulie's name, Bobby takes out a flashlight, and they head further in, calling out for Paulie. We see a single candle illuminating the dank room, with a man I assume is Paulie lying splayed out on the floor. Gina goes nuts, tries to wake Paulie, but he's out of it. She asks Bobby to do something. Bobby turns Paulie onto his back and checks if he's breathing. Gina asks if Paulie's alive. "Barely," responds Gina. Bobby takes out a radio and calls Kim, telling her to come on the 5th floor, cause he needs some help. On the table, next to the candle, Bobby spots a hypodermic syringe.
After some commercials we flash to Young Bobby and Young Paulie on a rooftop. Young Paulie wants Young Bobby to jump to another building. He gives the symbol for chicken and silently mouths "C'mon!". Young Bobby stands, conflicted. No sounds are heard, just some spooky music. From Bobby's young face we fade in to the Adult Bobby in the hospital looking in on Paulie. Kim walks up to Bobby with some cups of coffee and asks how Paulie's doing. Bobby tells her that Paulie is doing okay, but that he's unhappy that the paramedics ruined his near-fatal high. "He's lucky to be alive," Kim tells him and then says that Gina's still in the lounge. Bobby thanks kim and walks away to talk to Gina.
Bobby walks away to talk to Gina, who's sitting in the lounge. Bobby sits down next to her and tells her that Paulie is conscious. Gina asks if Paulie's going to be okay then. Bobby says he wants to know how long Paulie's been that bad. It's been a few years, she says. Bobby asks why Paulie hasn't been put in a detox. Gina says he was in rehab last March. Gina says he's going to meetings, got a job. Bobby notes that he hasn't heard anything about this from his mother. Gina says that she doesn't think her mother told anybody. "He just can't seem to beat it," Gina said. Bobby tells her it's not easy. Gina looks at her watch. "What's wrong?" asks Bobby. Gina says she has to get home and asks whether Paulie will get admitted. Bobby says he probably won't, they'll just observe him in the ER. Gina asks how long that will take, and Bobby replies that about a few hours. He then asks Gina if she can take Paulie home, but she says that her husband doesn't want Paulie in their home, because of the kids. Bobby kinda smiles and gives her a look that says, "You need a better man, girl." Gina says that her husband is not wrong about this, that there's history Bobby doesn't know about. Bobby says he'll talk to the doctor about getting Paulie detoxed. Gina smiles a thank you.
Bobby then approaches a doctor and asks him how Paulie's doing. "He's leaving," the doctor says. "What?" Bobby is surprised. The doctor explains that Paulie signed the AMA and walks away. Bobby glances at Paulie, who's getting dressed, and follows the doc saying that he was hoping they could keep Paulie over night, so that the family can get him into a program. The doc says Paulie will never get accepted. Bobby replies that Paulie could stay in the hospital, get hydrated, etc., and the family will have a chance to get Paulie into a program. The doctor asks whether Paulie's a friend of Bobby's. "We grew up together," Bobby says. The doctor asks Bobby to tell Paulie that, if he keeps it up, he'll die, but then says that Paulie can stay till the end of his shift. Bobby walks over to Paulie's room. Paulie is putting his pants on. Bobby eyes him carefully and says, "How are you feelin'? Cramped up a bit, huh?" Paulie turns around, and smiles over his shoulder and says, "Bobby." Bobby tells him that if he feels half as bad as he looks, he should go back to bed. "I've been better," Paulie says, throwing on a flannel shirt. He then asks Bobby if Gina called him. When Bobby confirms, Paulie says, "Baby sister is all up in my business again." If she wasn't, he'd be dead, Bobby tells him. Paulie doesn't reply, just continues dressing. Bobby walks up to him and in a whisper asks whether Paulie can stay there the night, and get a hot meal, have a place to sleep. "I'm not hungry," Paulie replies. Bobby says that the hospital can give him some fluids. "I don't like hospitals," Paulie says, visibly angry. Bobby gets angry as well. "You're cooking heroin now?" he ask Paulie. Paulie asks where his coat is. Bobby tells him that he has no coat and had to be wrapped in blankets when he was brought to the hospital. Paulie asks a nurse whether he may borrow a sweater or something, and she offers a blanket.
Paulie starts walking out as Bobby tries to get him to stay. "You can get in rehab," he says. Paulie keeps walking. Bobby says how Paulie is gonna go back to cooking heroin with roaches. Paulie says that he likes his roaches just fine and keeps walking. Gina tries to get in the way, she asks Bobby if Paulie can't stay. "He doesn't wanna stay," Bobby replies. Kim is watching and Gina tries to talk some sense into Paulie, but Paulie keeps telling her to get out of the way. Finally, he roughly shoves her aside. Gina gives Kim and Bobby a look, then goes after him. Bobby makes a helpless face and follows her. Outside, Paulie walks away. Gina calls after him offering help. Bobby runs out of the hospital and calls to Paulie if he's got any money. Paulie just walks, doesn't even look back. "Paulie, what are you gonna do, walk home?" Bobby yells, angrily. Kim tells Bobby to let Paulie go, but Bobby says he won't. Bobby offers Paulie a ride, yells that it's only 10 degrees and that he shouldn't be an idiot, but Paulie keeps walking. Bobby looks back at Kim and Gina resigned. Gina storms off. "Gina..." starts Bobby, but she walks away. Bobby glances back at Paulie's retreating form.
4:19 AM. We get a zoom on Bobby's eye opening as the buzzer of his intercom goes off. Bobby gets out of bed, furious, and walks up to the door. "It's four in the morning!" he barks. "Bobby..." comes through the intercom. "Who the hell is it?" asks Bobby. "It's Paulie. I'm sick," comes the answer. Bobby punches a fist against the intercom, but then lets Paulie in. He walks out into the hall and towards the staircase, still fuming. He looks down and sees Paulie falling down on the stairs. "Damn it," Bobby whispers and goes down to pick up Paulie. "I'm sick," Paulie murmurs. "What happened to your blanket?" Bobby asks. Paulie says he lost it. Bobby carries him upstairs and into the bathroom. He inspects Paulie's hands and says that he's suffering from hypothermia. "I don't think that's it," Paulie says, moaning, while Bobby takes his shirt off and puts a blanket around him. "It can be frostbite," Bobby tells Paulie. He draws a warm bath as Paulie moans. "Cramps?" Bobby asks. Paulie just moans. "It's the withdrawal," Bobby says. He then says he's gonna make some coffee, because something hot might help.
As Bobby goes to make coffee, Paulie gets up and digs in Bobby's medicine cabinet. He finds something he likes and opens the container. He closes the medicine cabinet and then we see Bobby's reflection in the mirror. He looks furious. "What are you doing?" Bobby asks angrily. He pushes Paulie strongly. "What are you doing, huh?!" Bobby yells. He checks the cabinet and finds the container missing. He starts checking around Paulie and finds it on the floor. Paulie just moans. "Bobby. Please. I need one," Paulie begs. "No," Bobby replies sternly. Paulie moans some more, "I need something. You're a paramedic, man, I'm sick." Bobby puts the container back into the cabinet. "You don't know how it feels," Paulie goes on. Bobby puts a blanket back onto him, without a word. "I just need one to make through the night," Paulie begs. "No," Bobby says quietly, and watches Paulie. "I don't want to be like this," Paulie cries and tells Bobby that he tried to kick heroin clean. Bobby tells him he needs to get into a program. Paulie starts saying that he knows that, shifting back and forth, and promises that he will. Bobby sits opposite him and looks him straight into his eyes and tells him that they're getting him into the program tomorrow. "That's the deal," he tells Paulie. "Yeah," says Paulie. "Yeah what?" demands Bobby. "Yeah, I promise," says Paulie. Bobby gets up quickly, angrily, and takes out one pill from the container, smashing the cabinet door back. He gives Paulie a pill. "That's one," Paulie complains. "That's the deal!" Bobby yells. Paulie takes the pill. In frustration, close to tears, Bobby runs a hand through his hair and leans against the wall. I'm so mad at Paulie, that if I could get my hands on him, I'd probably strangle him right there.
In the morning Bobby wakes up to find Paulie pawing through his kitchen drawers. "What are you looking for?" Bobby asks angrily. Paulie lies and says he's looking for coffee filters. "Right next to you, on top of the refrigerator," Bobby says slowly. Paulie glances there, and the filters are staring right into his face. He grabs the box, but fumbles with it, Bobby walks up to him, snatches the box out of his hands, takes a filter out and starts coffee. Paulie watches him guiltily. Bobby asks whether Paulie wants breakfast, he can make some eggs or something. Paulie just wants coffee. "Did you get some sleep?" Bobby asks. "Some," Paulie replies. Bobby tells Paulie that he's going to take him to Gina's and that she's gonna set up the rehab. Paulie lights a cigarette on the gas stove. He doesn't seem too interested in the rehab idea. "Nice people," he says finally. Bobby replies, barely restraining his anger, that they've got methadon and detox. "You've gotta do it, Paulie," Bobby tells him. "Yeah, I know," he replies quickly. "You know?" Bobby asks. "I know," says Paulie.
There's silence for a while, then Paulie observes that, when you really need a cup of coffee, it comes out more slowly. Both of them star at the coffee machine. Then Paulie reminds Bobby of a time when his father came home and went up to the roof, where Bobby and Gina were getting it on. "Yeah, I remember," Bobby gets the slightest of smiles. Paulie had to stall his father and make up a crazy story, yelling so that they'd hear him up top. Bobby smiles a bit more. "You got away by climbing on a fire escape," Paulie goes on, "butt naked." "My clothes were on the stairs," Bobby says, staring at the floor, smiling. Paulie laughs quietly and asks Bobby what was the name of the chick in 8G. "Swansen," replies Bobby, smiling and still staring into the floor. "Right," says Paulie. "She's like looking into her kitchen window and all she sees is this little hairy ass." "I can still hear her screaming," Bobby laughs. They both chuckle together. Paulie says that Gina stayed hidden behind a chimney for two hours. "Two hours," agrees Bobby, laughing. They chuckle some more, but they still avoid each other's eyes. Finally Paulie glances at Bobby. "Fun times," he says. "Yeah," nods Bobby, staring into the floor. "Coffee's ready," Paulie says and reaches for the pot.
It certainly wasn't supposed to be an amusing scene, what it did was ring a bell. Go back a year or something. Matty sitting in Bobby's kitchen, Bobby lecturing him on drinking and robbing people, asking him to go to the police, Matty being only interested in coffee and wanting to stay out of jail, and begging Boby for help. We all know the ouctome of that one. We all must have expected that the Paulie scenario had to end badly as well.
We return to Young Bobby's Memories. He and Paulie are throwing snowballs at a car. They get chased by a driver and climb over a wall, Bobby helping Paulie. We immediately go to Bobby and Kim in the present day. Bobbie is helping Kim climb over some wall. She can't believe that Bobby gave Paulie a Vicodin. He says he gave him just one pill. Kim fumes. "What?" asks Bobby. "It's like feeding a stray cat, he'll be back" she says. "Made you think of Matty?" she asks then. "What?!" Bobby asks again, this time sorta upset. I see the similarity, Kim sees the similarity, why can't you see it, Bobby? "Your friend, Paulie," Kim stresses to make Bobby see the similarity between the two. Bobby just walks on. Kim wonders whether Bobby's heard anything from Matty. Bobby says he hasn't. Kim changes the subject and says, "She seemed nice." Bobby is clearly somewhere else. "Who?" he asks. "Gina," Kim explains patiently, "Love of your life." "She is nice," says Bobby, and gets a lighter look on his face. Kim says that Bobby never should have let Gina go and wonders what would have happened if Bobby had married her, had kids, and lived in a house somewhere, and the kids would call him Daddy.
While she goes on like this they walk up on a snowy field to a bum who is frozen solid. "What have we got?" Bobby interrupts Kim, completely ignoring her. She laughs. Bosco, Yokas, Doc, and Carlos are standing around the corpse. Bobby asks if they called the coroner already. Yokas says they have. A cellphone starts ringing. Bobby doesn't seem to hear it, he stars at the frozen bum and says that it's an awful way to die, completely alone. I'm not gonna comment on the meaning of this. "Bobby, I think it's you," Kim says to Bobby. Bobby snaps out of his thoughtfulness, "Me?" She tells him that his cellphone's ringing. He answers it. It's his mother. He asks her to slow down. In Spanish, he tells her to stay at the house. He grabs his bag and starts walking away. Kim asks him what happened. "Somebody just robbed my mom's house," he says, walking off. Yokas tells Bosco to come along so that they can help out.
At Mama's house, Bobby knocks on the door. Mom opens, leads Bobby and Kim inside and speaks quickly in Spanish. She is frantically saying that Bobby has no idea what happened in her house. She came from the market and was gone for an hour. "What did they take?" Bobby asks. TV, microwave, and the new computer that Bobby bought her. Bobby asks if there was anybody in the house when she came back. She says no one was there. Kim tells her to sit down. Bosco starts wondering how they could have gotten in. "Fire escape?" he asks. Yokas asks her to repeat what's missing "They even took my alarm clock from the bed," Mom says, sobbing. Bosco asks if there were any burglaries in this building before. She says there weren't any. Bobby asks her if she's sure she locked the door. She replies that she knows she did because, when she came home, her door was locked just as she'd left it. Yokas asks if anybody else has a set of keys to her apartment. "Only my son," she replies. "Bobby, you still have my set of keys, don't you?" Bobby's face looks like it was made out of stone. He suddenly decides he has to go back to work. He asks Bosco and Yokas to take the report. He squats by his Mom, kisses her and tells her in Spanish that he'll be back in the evening while she cries. He gets up and quickly walks away. A lit lamp illuminates his face to bright orange and for a split second it looks as if fire was reflecting off his face.
At his own place, Bobby angrily enters and walks down dark halls to get to his kitchen. He searches the drawers, the same drawers Paulie was going through in the morning. Kim stands behind and asks if that's where Bobby kept the keys. Bobby is so mad he just mumbles something. "What? Paulie?" Kim tries to make sense of it. She asks how could Paulie know that set of keys was to Bobby's mom's apartment. The keys had a tag that said "Mom", Bobby shouts. "Damn!" The keys are not there. He slams the drawers close, and walks out. Kim runs her hand over her face, then follows Bobby.
A scary fast music is playing. Bobby is knocking on Paulie's door and yelling, "Paulie, Paulie open the door, you son of a bitch!" Kim says that he's probably not there, that he sold the stuff he stole and is cooking heroin right now. Bobby bashes in the door and rushes in. He finds Paulie at the table and grabs him, throwing him roughly against the wall. Kim stands at the door, watching. I can't help myself, and start crying. "I take you into my home and you pay me back by stealing from my mother?!!!" Paulie an hardly breathe, but he manages a "It wasn't me." Bobby doesn't believe him. "Where's my mother's stuff?" he yells, "Where is it, huh?" Bobby glances at the table and sees drugs there. "Did you sell it? Did you sell it for this?" Bobby grabs Paulie's drugs. Paulie denies, eyeing the drugs hungrily. Bobby accuses him of placing more importance on the drugs than his own friend. "That's my stuff," Paulie says weakly. "Yeah, it's more important now," Bobby goes on, fuming. "Put my stuff back down on the table," Paulie says. "More important to you than your family? Than your best friend?!" Bobby yells. "Put it back down on the table!" Paulie yells.
Bobby turns around and walks past Kim and down the hall, as Paulie follows, yelling after him, "That's my stuff, where are your going?" Bobby goes into the dank, dark bathroom and throws the drugs into the toilet. Suddenly, Paulie is there, holding a gun at Bobby. "Give me my stuff back," he says. Bobby turns around and sees the gun. "What"? he asks, disbelieving. "Give me my stuff," Paulie repeats. "What are you gonna do, shoot me now?" Bobby asks. Kim, from somewhere off screen, tells Bobby to give Paulie back the drugs. Paulie tells Bobby to walk away from the toilet. Bobby asks Paulie to give him the gun and reaches for it. Paulie shoots. The sound of the gun, even though I knew it was coming, scares me so much, I jump up in my seat.
The force of the bullet throws Bobby back. Bobby gasps. "Bobby!" Kim yells. The music stops. Bobby tears open his jacket. There is a huge bloodstain on his white shirt. He trips over the toilet and falls back, gasping. His leg is over the toilet. He gasps really hard, he can't breathe. He glances at the wound, then back at Paulie. Paulie moves forward. Toilet's eye view of Paulie pushing Bobby's leg aside and taking the drugs out of the bowl. That's when Kim walks in. "Oh, God, Bobby!" she cries. Paulie spins on Kim and puts the gun to Kim's head and starts to push her back down the hall. With the gun at her head Kim calls Bobby's name once more and then stutters, telling Paulie to take it easy. "Okay," she whispers, "Okay." Paulie pushes her into the room and slowly spins her around. With the gun pointed at the back of her head, Kim begs for her life. She breathes quickly. Paulie grabs a needle from the table, and then rushes off.
In shock Kim dazedly walks up towards the hall and looks down towards the toilet. She stands there in shock, breathing erratically. She then suddenly runs to Bobby. "Bobby! Bobby, talk to me!" she keeps yelling. She finds him in the toilet, covered with blood. "Oh my God!" she cries, "Bobby, oh God!" "Bobby, look at me," she begs, putting her hands on his face. Bobby starts to slip away. "Bobby, you stay with me, you hear me?" Kim's voice becomes echoes. We zoom in on Bobby's closing eyes. "Bobby, I'm serious, look at me!" Bobby closes his eyes. We fade to black. "I want you to stay with me, we're gonna get through this, okay?" we hear over the closing titles. "Bobby, Bobby, you stay with me, you hear me? You stay with me!"
"Damn it!!!"
